And as I recall, NeWS was spearheaded by Jim Gosling, of later Java fame/infamy. I have it running on my SPARCstation IPC that I bought in 1995 (and have fully pimped out with 48MB of RAM and a CG3 color fb). OpenWindows remains very much a favorite environment for me (much preferred over CDE) - I also use it on several SPARCstation 20's running Solaris 8 (I believe I remember building xvnews and xvgopher for USENET news and poking into gopher holes), as well as atop the CubX X11 server I have installed on a couple of NeXTstations and a 110MHz SS5 all running NextStep 3.3. 20+ years of computing fun. olvwm and xview toolkit forever!virginiapinehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02297323951413256867noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8349470052336612452.post-82657347004704421652022-11-05T07:02:11.067-07:002022-11-05T07:02:11.067-07:00This post is fascinating. They had purchased some Solbourne S4000 systems in the past and they stopped using them before my time specifically "because of Fortran".

We had a 4/330, Sparc 1s, Sparc 2s, and a Sparc 10 (running Solaris). Some of the 2s we upgraded to a Wietek(sp ?) They also built it for Irix, Ultrix, AIX, Cray, HP-UX, OSF/1, Intergraph Clipper, Apollo and maybe some others.

They had some experience porting and a small performance gain mattered. We also ran it for customers on our systems for a fee. One job took > 1 month on our largest system, an AIX RS/6000 with 64MB RAM. One customer had a job that took > 1 month on their Cray.

So if they said it had an issue and relegated them to the tech writers doing emacs & LaTeX instead of coding and running jobs that customers paid $ for, I believed them :-) Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07782193346528707757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8349470052336612452.post-56942245700784757172022-10-30T18:15:11.231-07:002022-10-30T18:15:11.231-07:00How do you mean, "not compatible"? Solbourne's entire value proposition was Sun compatibility, so it's interesting a notable package like that wouldn't.ClassicHasClasshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17331846076856918359noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8349470052336612452.post-59981296319732411082022-10-30T17:14:49.712-07:002022-10-30T17:14:49.712-07:00My 1st sysadmin job had Solbournes. I had a SS 1+ at work and SLS Linux (0.98 kernel) on a 486 at home. The 486 had faster graphics, but the sparc would multitask better.

I ran olvwm for awhile, up through an Ultra-10 workstation and Solaris 2.6. I forgot when Gnome came out for Solaris, but I was running that on Solaris 10 at work.

Today, I have a coworker who compiles & runs OLWM (olvwm?) on Fedora.Tomhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07782193346528707757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8349470052336612452.post-36179100514042946492022-10-30T14:58:09.079-07:002022-10-30T14:58:09.079-07:00Hey, thanks!
